I feel like you're exaggerating a bit too much with the difficulty of d2. I was determined to not buy it but crumbled in the end (for shame) and bought it anyway. If you have the money both as they are both excellent, but if on a budget honestly GD will probably be the safer bet. D2R is superb but it has stubbornly stuck to its old school roots, having to carry actual scrolls around for example. GD is overall a bigger, more deep and well 'better' game, but they are scratching very different itches. it can be insanely hard (as hard as the Krieg fight in GD) I had actually forgot how hard it was tbh, the early game is super super rough, like brutal at points when you are a lowly sorceress with 1 puny fire bolt and you have to kill 5 cold enchanted bow using minions and a named unique who keep freezing you. It has 2 and only 2 buttons and its really hard compared to almost all modern ARPGs, like normal mobs or a basic pack of champions can easily bend you over if you aren't prepared. The first thing to keep in mind, D2R is VERY old school, like items that have limited charges on them, needing to have actual arrows for basic attacks with a bow old school.
